🌟 Welcome to Little Dreams Nursery
Free Flow Learning at Our Nursery
At Little Dreams Nursery we are excited to introduce our Free Flow Learning approach, supporting children to move freely between indoor and outdoor environments throughout the day.
This approach is rooted in Scottish Government and Care Inspectorate best practice guidance, ensuring we provide high-quality early learning experiences
What is Free Flow Learning?
Free flow learning allows children to choose where and how they play, giving them access to both indoor and outdoor environments for extended periods.
This reflects national guidance such as Realising the Ambition (Education Scotland), which highlights that children learn best through play, curiosity, and meaningful experiences in stimulating environments. [education.gov.scot]
Benefits of Free Flow Learning
🌿 Promotes Independence and Confidence
Children take ownership of their learning, supporting autonomy and self-belief—key elements of play pedagogy in Scotland. [playscotland.org]
🧠 Supports Individual Learning Styles
Free flow allows children to learn at their own pace, following their interests, which is central to Curriculum for Excellence Early Level approaches. [education.gov.scot]
💬 Encourages Communication and Social Skills
Children engage with peers across different environments, building strong relationships and communication skills.
🏃♂️ Improves Physical Health and Wellbeing
Access to outdoor play every day supports children’s health, development, and wellbeing, as outlined in Care Inspectorate guidance. [careinspectorate.scot]
🌈 Enhances Creativity and Imagination
Open-ended spaces and materials encourage creativity, problem-solving, and exploration.
🌍 Connection with Nature
Regular outdoor play helps children understand and appreciate the natural world, a key focus in “Out to Play” guidance from the Scottish Government. [gov.scot]
Our Approach and National Guidance
Our free flow practice is guided by key Scottish early years frameworks, including:
These frameworks highlight that children thrive in environments where they can play freely, explore, be active, and follow their own interests.
How We Support Free Flow Learning
Our approach also reflects Care Inspectorate expectations that children should experience a balance of organised and freely chosen play, supporting their confidence, creativity, and wellbeing. [careinspectorate.scot]
